Creamy Chicken, Asparagus, & Orzo

Creamy Chicken, Asparagus, & Orzo is a delicious dinner with parmesan orzo is easy to make and delicious to eat. orzo. It is a one skillet meal that is easy to make and takes approximately 30 minutes to cook from start to finish. The creamy sauce is rich and tasty and is the perfect addition to chicken, asparagus, and orzo. This is a must try recipe for everyone!

What Is Orzo?

Orzo is a type of pasta that resembles the shape of a grain of rice. Albeit, bigger than a grain of rice! As a result, it has a somewhat chewy texture that grabs onto sauces and holds them better than longer pastas such as spaghetti. Ironically, though orzo is thought to be an Italian pasta, this pasta is better known in the US than it is in Italy!

There are many different ways to serve orzo. It can be served alone as a side dish for dinner or as it’s own meal. Orzo can be found in many soups that would do well with either rice or small pastas. Additionally, it can be incorporated into sauces that are served over meats and vegetables to make the dish a complete meal. As such, orzo is an excellent choice for the creamy chicken & asparagus dish!

Dinner Ingredients

Ingredient-wise, this recipe looks typical. Some key ingredients are chicken, asparagus, & orzo which makes sense since that’s basically the name of the recipe! Beyond that, you will also need cream and parmesan cheese along with some other recipe staples.

Here is the full list:

  • 2 lbs Chicken boneless chicken breast
  • 2 tbsp Paprika
  • 3 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 bundle Asparagus each stalk cut into 2-3 pieces
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 2 tbsp Garlic minced
  • 2 cups Orzo uncooked
  • 3 cups Chicken Broth low sodium is fine
  • 2 cups Half & Half
  • 2 cups Parmesan Cheese grated
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Cooking This Dish

This creamy chicken, asparagus, & orzo dish doesn’t require a lot of prep work which is wonderful as far as I am concerned. The little prep work that you need to do can be done as the chicken is cooking. Therefore, the prep work isn’t in addition to the cooking time. Rather, it is during the cooking time! I love multi-tasking like that.

Follow these simple instructions and enjoy your amazing, creamy, 1 skillet dinner:

  • Season chicken with salt, pepper, and paprika on both sides.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium high heat.
  • Sear chicken in skillet for approx 5 minutes per side until chicken is cooked through. (depending on the thickness of your chicken, you might need more or less cooking time). When done, transfer to plate and keep warm.
  • In the same skillet, add the asparagus and saute for about 3 minutes. Let the asparagus soften a bit, but you want them to stay a little crispy so don’t over cook. Once done, transfer to a plate and keep warm.
  • In the same skillet, add the onion and garlic and saute for about 3 minutes so that the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  • Add the orzo to the skillet and saute for 1 minute to get it a little toasty.
  • Now, add half and half and chicken broth to skillet and stir.
  • Bring to a boil, then turn down heat to medium low. Cover with lid and let it cook for 10 more minutes.
  • Stir in parmesan cheese. Taste a little bit and season with additional salt and/or pepper, if needed.
  • Add asparagus back and stir it into orzo mixture.
  • Slice chicken into thin slices.
  • Add chicken back into skillet and mix with sauce, orzo, and asparagus.
  • Once mixed together, serve immediately.

Creamy Goodness

This creamy chicken, asparagus, and orzo dinner is delicious. I’m positive that it will become a family favorite. The downside of this recipe is that it is so good, there might not be leftovers. However, it’s easy enough to cook so making it another time shouldn’t be a problem.

If you are dying to try this recipe and don’t have chicken, you could still make this a variety of ways:

Substitute the chicken with pan seared steak. Creamy steak, asparagus, and orzo sounds like an enticing dinner.

Substitute the chicken with pork. Creamy pork, asparagus, and orzo has a appetizing ring to it, if you ask me. You could use pork chops, boneless pork ribs, or pork loin sliced into smaller slices. Just make sure to adjust cooking time accordingly.

If you aren’t gung-ho on meat, in general, you could make this creamy orzo with just asparagus and keep it as a vegetarian dinner. It’s filling enough to skip the meat and has plenty of protein from the dairy (parmesan cheese and half and half).

However, if you want to keep the chicken in the dish, but don’t have orzo, you can still make this dish! You could make it with rice; either white or brown rice would do fine. Or, perhaps, you want to keep with the pasta-ish starch, you could cook this creamy chicken dish with bow ties, tortellini, etc. Whatever you want to switch things up with will be delicious, I’m sure!

Pork Stir Fry

Pork Stir Fry is an easy dinner that you can throw together in less than 30 minutes making it a great choice for a busy weeknight meal. Stir-frying derived from a Chinese cooking technique that uses a small amount of very hot oil in a large, rounded pan (or wok) to cook a quick and healthy dinner for a whole family. I love making stir fry dinners because you can add whatever meat you would like, change up the vegetables, and can mix up the sauces. Many variety of dinners with the same easy dish.

Pork, which has been referred to as ‘the other white meat’ is a great option for stir fry because it cooks quickly and soaks up the delicious flavors that go into this yummy dish. Additionally, pork is a great way to change up your protein each night. You can switch up chicken, red meat, seafood, and pork and keep dinner from getting boring. Nobody wants to eat the same thing every night and with variety, you don’t have to!

Easy Dinner

Whenever you make an Asian-inspired meal, the ingredients list always looks really long. Don’t get discouraged before you attempt the recipes though. Have you heard the expression, “Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”? You don’t want to judge someone or something just from the outside appearance. You need to get to know the ins and outs of something before you can make an assessment of how they are. And these recipes are the perfect example of that! If you see a long list of ingredients, you might think, that looks complicated and I am only interested in easy dinners.

Once you try out the recipes, you will find that skillet or wok meals are super easy. Yes, you will need to do some prep work as far as slicing and dicing is concerned. And you will need to take inventory of all the ingredients you need to prepare dinner. However, what you will find is that as you cook these dinners, they are easy to make. Just cook up the meat first, then let the veggies soften and take on the flavor, after that, add the meat back in and top off the items for the yummy sauce. Mix together and voila! Dinner is done! And it only takes 20 to 25 minutes from start to finish. How great is that?

Ingredients

As I just mentioned, you will need quite a few things for this pork stir fry. Of course, you will need pork. Depending on your preferences for vegetables, you can mix and match other veggies than the ones listed below, but try to mix up at least 3 different vegetables to give the dish more flavor and texture. Finally, you will need a few key elements that make up the yummy sauce that keeps you eating every last bite!

Here is what you will need:

  • 3 lb Pork Loin Sliced to small pieces
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 tbsp Garlic minced
  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper
  • 1 Peppers sliced
  • 10 oz Mushrooms
  • 1 cup Carrots grated or chopped
  • 1 Onion sliced
  • 2 cups Broccoli
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp Ginger
  • 2 tbsp Oyster Sauce

How To Make

If you have ever cooked with a wok, you know that it is awesome for stir fry dishes. It is also a great way to cook for a large family which is why I love using a wok when making dinner! I can put large quantities of meat and vegetables in the skillet without worrying about it all fitting in or falling out onto the stove. It’s great to have a huge pan like that.

For making this pork stir fry, I can’t stress it enough, it’s really easy to make! You will start by heating up the olive oil in the wok (if you don’t have a wok, don’t worry, just use the biggest pan you have). Next, add garlic and cook it for 1 – 2 minutes so that it’s fragrant and browns. Then, put the sliced pork in the skillet and cook it through. Once cooked, remove it from the pan so that it does not over cook and get dried out. Keep that pan on the stove though, you want to add the veggies now and cook them for approximately 8 to 10 minutes. After that, add in the soy sauce and ginger and mix well. Let this cook for another 1 to 2 minutes so that the taste gets on everything, yum! Finally, add the pork back into the veggie mixture and mix well. Don’t keep the the pan on the heat for too long, you don’t want to continue to cook the dish, more to keep it warm while the ingredients meld together. Just before removing from the heat, add in the oyster sauce and mix it up. Your dinner is done and it cooked quickly. Super easy.

Ways To Serve

Pork stir fry has a lot of versatility. You can change up the veggies and/or sauce ingredients for this yummy dinner and have pork stir fry a few nights a week, but have a different dinner each time you serve it. Crazy, right?

Another great thing about this stir fry is that it can be served many different ways.

1. Low Carb Option

If you are looking to cut back on carbohydrates, you can skip the starch and cook the pork and veggies. Then transfer to your dish and eat! No rice, pasta, or potato needed. Just dig in and enjoy.

2. Rice

The obvious choice for pork stir fry is to serve it over rice. Typically, stir fry is served directly on top of rice. Therefore, you might want to cook white rice, brown rice, or fried rice. Any rice would be great as a backdrop for this yummy stir fry dinner.

3. Noodles

If you need to have a starch with your dinner and you are sick of rice, you could serve the pork stir fry over noodles. There are tons to choose from after all. You could use a thin spaghetti or even a thicker noodle like fettucini. Those, of course, are not typically first choices for asian dishes, but you will likely have those in your pantry. Other noodles that you might want to try with this pork are ramen noodles or rice noodles. Both are more traditional asian noodles and will pair very nicely with this meal.

If you do opt to make pork stir fry a few nights a week, you could change up the starches and make the meal seem completely different each time. How is that for awesome?!

Shrimp Fried Rice

Shrimp Fried Rice is the healthiest fried food you will be able to make AND enjoy! If you are like me, you probably love getting Chinese takeout. I’m pretty obsessed with appetizers at Chinese restaurants and need to order a few key apps like Crab Rangoon and Chicken Fingers. Another item I always order is Fried Rice, ideally House Fried Rice which is a mixture of rice, veggies, egg, and shrimp. Yum! It’s like getting so many dishes all in one yummy rice.

Ingredients Needed

If you have ever made homemade Chinese food, you probably know that the dishes require quite a few ingredients. The good thing is that those ingredients are pretty healthy and very flavorful. Another good thing is that most of the ingredients are things you keep stocked in your pantry and refrigerator.

For this Shrimp Fried Rice, you will need the following:

  • 2 tbsp Vegetable or Canola Oil
  • 16 oz Shrimp raw and de-veined
  • 1 cup Onion diced
  • 1 cup Carrots diced
  • 1.5 tbsp Garlic minced
  • 1 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 3 cups Cooked Rice
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 cup Frozen Peas
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce low sodium
  • 2 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1/2 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • Chopped Green Onions if desired for garnish

How To Make

Like most skillet meals, you will start by heating some oil. Next, cook the meat and in this case, cook the shrimp. After the shrimp is cooked, set it aside and move to cook the veggies and seasonings. After those are tender, you will mix in the cooked rice (that you have already prepared before beginning this process) to ‘fry’ it up. Don’t worry, the rice won’t be deep fried, you just want to make the rice crispy. Next, push the rice to the side and crack an egg to cook up and scramble. Then mix the scrambled egg into the rice mixture. Finally, you will add the peas, rice vinegar, and sesame oil to the rice to combine for a few more minutes. Can you believe you just made this yummy looking shrimp fried rice? It looks great, doesn’t it? And it was pretty straightforward and easy!

Making It A Meal

The Shrimp Fried Rice is a great Chinese takeout alternative that you can make at home. This healthy fried food cooks in under 30 minutes. Therefore, it’s healthy, easy to make, and cooks quickly. Awesome! Wouldn’t you prefer to skip fast food and opt for something healthy on those crazy schedule kind of nights? Just throw this dinner together and it will taste great!

The rice mixture consists of everything you would need in a complete meal that cooks in one skillet. Again, awesome so that the cleanup is minimized. If you did want to bring your homemade Chinese food to a takeout order kind of level, you could make a few appetizers to pair with this rice. I have quite a few recipes for Chinese dishes and apps on my site. A few easy ones you could pair with this shrimp fried rice is Crab Rangoon and/or Chicken Fingers. Who knew making your own Chinese food was so doable?

Egg Roll In A Bowl

Egg Roll In A Bowl…what does that entail? I know what an egg roll is and I LOVE them! The crispy egg roll wrapper with the tasty pork and veggies that are loaded inside is just so yummy. The only thing I don’t like about egg rolls is that only 1 or 2 come in an order at a Chinese restaurant (I could eat 3 or 4 myself in a single sitting!).

So what is an egg roll in a bowl? Well, it’s basically the yummy goodness of the egg roll filling with ground turkey instead of ground pork (although you could use ground pork, if you wanted) minus the fried egg roll wrapper. Therefore, it’s a way healthier version of an egg roll with the same great flavor. It is one of my new favorite Asian dishes to make at home!

Ingredients Needed

There are quite a few ingredients that go into an egg roll in a bowl dinner. However, most of the ingredients are seasonings and additions for the tasty sauce. As far as gathering everything is concerned, most of the ingredients can probably be found in your pantry right now.

Here is what you will need:

  • Ground Turkey
  • Coleslaw Mix
  • Shredded Carrots
  • Yellow Onion
  • Mushrooms
  • Green Onion
  • Olive Oil
  • Sesame Oil
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Soy Sauce (low sodium, of course!)
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Sriracha Sauce is optional

How To Make It

Egg roll in a bowl is really easy to cook. Basically, heat up the oil, add the onions and garlic (like the way most yummy recipes start with), then add the mushrooms, carrots, ground ginger, and coleslaw mix. Next, brown the ground turkey. Then, add in the sauce ingredients which are soy sauce, sesame oil, and apple cider vinegar. That’s pretty much it! Do you think you can handle that? I do! In fact, I know you can handle that.

The first time I made this, I loved it! I was a little anxious about making it only because I had never made “real” Chinese food and I was worried that I would screw it up. The last thing I want to do is mess up dinner – my hangry family would never let me live it down! This is a super easy recipe and you really can’t mess it up.

Say Goodbye To Takeout

I can’t say enough good things about this egg roll in a bowl. It is the healthiest Chinese food I have found AND have been able to make myself.

The first time I made this, my entire family complimented me on it. It was something completely different than what they were used to having for dinner and they loved it! A true testament to how good it is. I loved it as well. So much so that I started craving it just 2 weeks later and decided to make it AGAIN! I still had some anxiety about making it because I wasn’t skilled at my Chinese food cooking, but once again, it came out amazing! I am finally comfortable making this recipe without anxiety.

I’m not going to forgo ordering regular egg rolls, when I get Chinese takeout, but this is such a great dish in itself. You will literally crave the healthiness of this tasty dinner. And did I mention it is super easy to make? Well, I can’t help myself, easy recipes that taste great are my favorite things to cook!

Try making this an Asian inspired dinner by serving the egg roll in a bowl with crab rangoons and Chinese chicken fingers. These are tried and true recipes that I love and are also easy to make!

Italian Skillet Chicken

Italian Skillet Chicken. What exactly is that? The name doesn’t really sound interesting, but I can assure you that you will love this easy to make chicken dinner. This dish is technically a skillet dinner. I don’t know about you, but when I hear the phrase, skillet dinner, I’m thinking it’s a decent meal, but probably boring, worth making, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, this chicken skillet is something you could eat at a nice restaurant. It is not boring, there is so much flavor, it will surprise you.

Easy to Make

Now you are probably thinking, if this is meal is restaurant quality, will I be able to make this? And will it taste the same when I make it? Yes! Even a novice cook can make this dinner and look like a professional chef. This chicken dinner is easy to make and can be ready in less than 30 minutes. Oh, and remember it is a skillet dish? You know that means just 1 pan to clean up, right?

Delicious Dinner

Delicious dinners don’t have to be complicated. And easy dinners can be delicious! This Italian skillet chicken has a sauce that you will want to drown your rice or mashed potatoes in. The sauce consists of garlic (everything tastes better with garlic, am I right?), white wine, lemon juice, and chicken broth mainly. Then you add in some regular seasonings like black pepper and oregano. And don’t forget the yummy vegetables such as spinach, baby bella mushrooms, and tomatoes. Wait, are those a fruit? Regardless, the entire meal comes together quickly and has little prep. Just cut off the fat on the chicken and wash the veggies, then start cooking. Soon after you start, it will be ready to be served. You will be amazed at how good of a cook you really are.

Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet w/Baby Carrots

Ground turkey sweet potato skillet with baby carrots has been a family favorite in my house for years. I recently posted my plated dinner on my Facebook feed and had numerous friends reach out asking for the recipe! There are so many great things about this recipe that I’m positive you will want to make this favorite dinner soon!

What Makes This A Favorite Dish?

This skillet dish is great for all kinds. For one, it is a 1-pan meal. You cook everything in 1 pan! That means less cleanup at the end. And who wants to clean up a huge mess after you cook a meal? Certainly not me. I can’t imagine that anyone would WANT to clean more. The less steps it takes to relaxing at the end of the day, the more I want in!

Another great thing about ground turkey sweet potato skillet is that all of the ingredients are cooked together to make a flavorful and complete meal. The savory taste of cumin and chili pepper really bring the ground turkey, sweet potatoes, and baby carrots to a new level. You can mix and match the amounts, if you like certain spices more than others. You are in charge, take it!

Ingredients Needed

  • 6 each Sweet Potatoes peeled and cubed pre-cooked in microwave
  • 2 lbs Ground Turkey
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Shredded
  • 3 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 3 tbsp Cumin
  • 2 tbsp Garlic Minced
  • 2 cups Baby Carrots pre-cooked in microwave
  • 2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp pepper to taste
  • Sour Cream as a topping Greek Yogurt is a great sour cream alternative

Easy To Make

This skillet creation is really easy to make. While you work on cooking a few things, you can be prepping the next steps. For example, while the turkey is cooking, you can microwave the baby carrots (in a small bowl of water) to soften them up, essentially, cooking them. After the carrots are done, you can add the sweet potatoes to the microwave to pre-cook those. Because these don’t have to be mushy, you won’t have to wait 15-20 minutes for those to be ready, approximately 10 minutes will be fine.

This savory dish can be cooked in less than 30 minutes. I have made this dinner many times on nights that I had limited time to make supper and it comes together quickly every time. It’s a huge lifesaver when you are trying to feed the starving people in your family on a tight time schedule.

How Does It Taste?

Not only is this recipe healthy, it is absolutely delicious! Yes, you can have a healthy meal and it can still taste great. The ground turkey is low fat which is a great alternative to red meat which is generally, fatty. Sweet potatoes have more nutritional value than regular potatoes. They contain more fiber per serving, more vitamin A & C, and calcium as well as other essential nutrients.

Ground turkey sweet potato skillet with baby carrots is pretty healthy, we’ve established that. In addition to that, it really has a yummy taste that is super easy to eat. The sweet taste of the sweet potatoes and carrots is a great contrast to the cumin and cheese that are added in to this dish. It’s a clean way to eat a comfort type of food. And you won’t feel guilty going for seconds because you guessed it, it’s healthy!
